Madan class IX student testifies ...
|
Madan, a class IX student of Sunbeam High School, Katpadi,Vellore likes it when it rains. But he is worried that gradually rains are getting more and more irregular. With all the sense of urgency that a 14-year-old can muster he said, 'Rains revive life on our planet, we cannot do without them. Still we are doing very little to conserve water. Even the water which is available is wasted in so many ways. Industries pollute our rivers and lakes...but we just sit and watch. We should do something about it. Stop industries from polluting nearby lakes and streams. I do what I can -- plant trees...you should too. Let us do what we can, otherwise will there be anything left for us? Please, think about it..."

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AND AWARENESS THE NEED OF THE HOUR Nov 12,
Greenpeace campaigners organised an exhibition in active co-operation with Pasumai Thyaagam, a local organisation active in the sphere of environmental protection and conservation.
The exhibition comprised photos of the Bhopal disaster shot by the noted photographer Raghu Rai, and photos documenting severe environmental degradation in and around Alang, Gujarat -- where hazardous shipwrecking has created another environmental nightmare. Citizens across a cross section of society took keen interest in the exhibition. 'Greenpeace should make more efforts like these through
the electronic media, and organise them more frequently. Then an even better impact can be expected,' said Mr Manivellam, a retired armyperson of Vellore.
The campaigners also interacted with members of the local media who were taken on a guided visit to an environmental hotspot near Ranipet, about 30 km from Vellore. The region is believed to be the second most polluted area in India after the region around Kanpur, UP. Nov 13, In a school on the outskirts of Vellore, members from Greenpeace interacted with school students and arranged a slogan writing effort. The effort resulted in several innovative slogans stressing the need for environmental protection, and awareness.
