Mr. A Murthy testifies ...
|
It is a sinking feeling for A Murthy, a fisherman, whose life has been badly affected by polluting factories. A resident of Sonaganchavadi, in the Sipcot industrial belt, he says, 'The situation has badly deteriorated during the last five years. Diseases are rampant, especially skin diseases... Children are the most affected, including girls who reach puberty very early...I cannot even earn a decent amount because fish stock have gone down, and the quality also has gone down.'

Manufacturing PVC a very serious risk Greenpeace has been at the forefront of opposing the setting up of a factory by Chemplast Sanmar, a Chennai based company that will convert Vinyl Chloride Monomer (VCM) into Poly Vinyl Chloride (PVC). Navroz Mody, a senior Greenpeace campaigner presented the scientific details to the tribunal members and the participating audience at a hearing of the Indian peoples Tribunal, here in Cuddalore. The data based on reliable laboratory results, which were carried out by experts clearly revealed the threats emerging from the manufacture of PVC. He also highlighted how the entire process of manufacturing PVC carried very serious risks to the surrounding biotic community. Greenpeace reaffirmed its commitment to oppose the spread or entry of factories and industrial units that contributed to environmental damage in any form. |
