Mr. V. J. Jose -
Periyar River keeper
testifies ...
|
The Periyar river that flows past his land has made Jose learn some hard facts. For two centuries, his forefathers lived off the river. It provided a means of transport; the breeze near the river gave relief in summer. And above all, its water was fit for consumption. But, 'within the last 30 years everything has changed - for the worse. It's all due to the Government's inability to check pollutants being dumped into the river.' However, Jose has an action plan. Greenpeace has appointed him Periyar River Keeper and provided him with a motorboat to patrol the Periyar, gather samples, and generate awareness. 'It will enable me to ensure that those who pollute are identified, and their acts be stopped for good.' |
